Visiting a farm? Help secure the future

If you visit a property, even socially, you have a role in helping producers keep animal disease out.

Even if you are visiting once and don't intend to go near livestock, you should still consider the risks associated with your visits and on-farm activities. This will provide a few tips to think about when you enter a property.

Generally, you should consider:

  • making sure you contact the producer to arrange the visit - don't just drop in
  • waiting for the property-owner to meet you at the designated area
  • following farm biosecurity directions given to you by farmers on properties you visit.
  • where it's possible, parking your car away from where livestock are held
  • ensuring your clothes aren't muddy and that your footwear has been cleaned - ideally disinfected - before visiting a property
  • if you're bringing vehicles, trailers, machinery and other equipment to areas where livestock may be, cleaning and disinfecting them before you go onto a property, and again before you leave, to help protect the properties you visit
