ParaBoss update boosts biosecurity and parasite management

Australian livestock producers now have access to an improved Product Search Tool through ParaBoss, making it easier to compare parasite control products and support effective on-farm biosecurity.

Effective parasite management is an important part of farm biosecurity. It helps protect animal welfare, maintain productivity and reduce the risk of chemical resistance.

Resources for parasite control

ParaBoss is the national resource for parasite control in Australian sheep, goats and cattle. Through a suite of sites — WormBoss, FlyBoss, LiceBoss and TickBoss — producers, veterinarians and advisors have access to evidence-based guidance to support effective on-farm parasite management.

This includes practical advice on prevention, monitoring and treatment, as well as strategies to slow the development of chemical resistance — a growing challenge for livestock producers.

A range of practical tools and resources is available through ParaBoss, including:

  • regional parasite control programs aligned to seasonal conditions
  • an online register of ParaBoss-certified advisors and worm egg count (WEC) providers
  • tools to support management decisions, such as the Drench Decision Guides and Product Search Tool.

The sites also host comprehensive technical information on the worms, flies, lice and ticks that affect sheep, cattle and goats across Australia. This information is tailored to Australian production systems and environmental conditions, helping users understand parasite risks in their region.

Details include:

  • the major parasite species impacting ruminant livestock
  • parasite biology and life cycles
  • environmental drivers of infestation
  • the economic impacts on productivity and animal welfare
  • signs and symptoms of infestation.

Together, these resources support informed, proactive parasite management as a key component of on-farm biosecurity.

Product Search Tool update

The Product Search Tool has recently been updated to improve usability and enhance its practical value. The tool provides a centralised source of information on all anti-parasitic products registered for use in sheep, cattle and goats in Australia.

Animal Health Australia worked closely with product manufacturers to review the data, ensuring that treatment information and recommendations are accurate, current and aligned with product labels.

Users can refine their search using a range of filters, including:

  • host species
  • target parasite
  • chemical group and active ingredients
  • application method
  • length of protection
  • withholding periods.

These features make it easier to compare the many parasite control products available on the Australian market. By adjusting search criteria, producers can identify treatments that best suit their production system and management goals.

Value to industry

ParaBoss is a joint initiative of Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and the University of New England (UNE).

Recent updates to ParaBoss resources, including the Product Search Tool, highlight the continued investment in maintaining ParaBoss as a trusted, practical and up-to-date knowledge hub for parasite management.

Since its establishment in 2016, ParaBoss has played an important role in strengthening parasite management across Australia’s ruminant livestock industries. The Bosses provide independent, science-based information developed in collaboration with subject matter experts.

ParaBoss also contributes to improving industry capability through training, certification and quality assurance programs. Veterinarians and advisors can become ParaBoss-certified in Sheep Parasite Management by completing a training delivered through UNE Partnerships. WEC providers can also become ParaBoss-endorsed through a certification process that assesses test accuracy and precision against prescribed standards.

Producers can seek out ParaBoss-certified advisors and WEC providers to achieve accurate diagnosis and effective parasite control strategies. They can also develop their own knowledge through the extensive online learning materials available within ParaBoss.
