National Biosecurity Week, running from 24–30 August 2026, is a timely reminder that prevention, preparedness and early action are essential to protecting Australia’s food supply, environment, economy and way of life.
Biosecurity plays an important role in reducing the risk and impact of pests, diseases and weeds across plant, animal, aquatic, marine and environmental systems. Strong biosecurity helps protect farms, animals, waterways, natural environments, supply chains and trade, while supporting healthy communities and ecosystems.
Preparedness starts long before an emergency occurs. Having plans, processes and good practices in place supports early detection, faster reporting and more effective responses when biosecurity risks emerge. For businesses, industries and organisations, this can include maintaining biosecurity plans, training staff, keeping good records and understanding reporting pathways.
Individuals also have an important role to play. Simple everyday actions such as cleaning footwear, equipment and vehicles after visiting farms, parks, beaches or waterways, following biosecurity requirements when travelling, and reporting unusual pests, weeds or animal and plant health concerns, can help reduce risks and protect Australia’s biosecurity system.
Biosecurity is a shared responsibility that relies on collaboration between governments, industry, businesses, educators, community groups and individuals. Whether you’re a grower monitoring crops, a fisher maintaining clean gear, a traveller declaring risk items, a teacher sharing biosecurity resources or a gardener reporting an unusual pest, every action contributes to a stronger and more resilient biosecurity system.
National Biosecurity Week provides an opportunity for organisations and communities to raise awareness, share information, promote training and encourage practical action. By working together and planning ahead, we can help protect what matters most and strengthen Australia’s biosecurity system for future generations.
